What is Hypefare?
Hypefare was a peer-to-peer online marketplace for high-end men's fashion. I began working on this passion project in 2019 and teamed up with Tim Maier in 2020 to bring it to market. Unfortunately, we wound it down in 2021 as other commitments took priority.
Features:
- Auth — token-based authentication via JWTs and secure user session management (cookies)
- Custom Invoicing — implemented an invoice generator to convert Stripe invoices to more user-friendly invoices for buyers/sellers
- Integrated w/ Stripe Connect — Self-serve onboarding for sellers, automated payouts, and secure transaction handling.
- Integrated w/ WebSocket API — offered real-time messaging and personal notifications
Why Did I Build It?
I pursued Hypefare to close four gaps that I saw in existing fashion-resale marketplaces:
- Excessive fees – double-digit commission for minimal seller support.
- Weak seller vetting – counterfeit and poor-rated sellers could trade unchecked.
- High entry barriers – casual sellers needed an ABN or company registration before listing.
- No local focus – Australian and NZ collectors paid extra shipping, currency fees and were sometimes geo-blocked from some marketplaces.
What we did
- Introduced a flat 6% commission capped at $50 AUD
- Added mandatory ID verification and a tiered-rating penalty system to lift seller quality.
- Enabled instant listings for individuals (no business registration required).
- Integrated AU/NZ payment, shipping and customer-service workflows.
Although the venture was sunset in 2021, the MVP validated the model and sharpened my skills in marketplace economics, trust-and-safety design and cross-border payments.
